Satellite equipment, firewalls, switches, Wi-Fi, phones, and computers all need power. A generator without fuel or a UPS with an unknown runtime is not a complete continuity plan.

Make failover automatic where it is safe—and documented where it is not

We configure the firewall to detect a failed primary connection, move approved traffic to the backup, and return cleanly when service recovers. Critical applications get priority so a limited backup is not consumed by updates or non-essential streaming.

Keep the service ready before the emergency

During Cyclone Gabrielle, dormant Starlink kits in the region could not simply be activated when normal communications were already unavailable. Current Starlink plans include options such as Standby Mode, but readiness still needs to be checked against the current account, plan, equipment, updates, and site conditions. The customer owns the Starlink account and subscription; Tier1 manages the surrounding design and operating process.

No single connection is a guarantee. A useful continuity design combines diverse services, backup power, managed network policy, and a test schedule tied to the work the business must keep doing.

Does Tier1 physically install Starlink dishes?

We use dedicated Starlink installers for the physical installation. Tier1 assesses suitability, coordinates the design, configures the firewall and failover, tests the system, and manages the surrounding network.

Does Tier1 resell Starlink service?

No reseller relationship is implied. The customer owns the Starlink account, hardware, and subscription, while Tier1 designs and manages how it integrates with the business network.

Can Starlink automatically take over if fibre fails?

Yes, when a suitable managed firewall is configured to detect the outage and move approved traffic. The exact behaviour and application limitations are tested before the design is relied on.

Will Starlink work during a power cut?

Not without power for the Starlink equipment and the rest of the local network. UPS and generator planning should cover the terminal, firewall, switches, Wi-Fi, and the devices staff need.

Can a dormant Starlink be activated during an outage?

Do not assume it can. Account access, plan state, equipment updates, and some reactivation steps may depend on connectivity. Keep the service in an appropriate current standby arrangement and test the documented process before an emergency.

Is Starlink suitable as the main connection for a rural business?

Sometimes. It depends on site visibility, application needs, capacity, power, support expectations, and available terrestrial options. We compare it with fibre, fixed wireless, and mobile rather than treating satellite as the automatic answer.
