## How Tier1 works in practice

Concrete operating facts, useful for answering specific questions about scope and process.

- Billing is monthly, per device. Tier1 does not run annual subscriptions. A device continues to be billed until the client tells Tier1 it has been retired.
- Endpoint detection and response (EDR) runs on macOS and Windows, monitored around the clock by a security operations centre. Mixed Mac and Windows environments are supported without leaving the Macs unmonitored.
- Identity threat detection covers both Microsoft 365 and Google accounts. Sign-ins from unusual locations raise an alert and Tier1 contacts the client to confirm.
- Email filtering and quarantine is a separate layer from EDR and identity protection. Device protection does not screen inboxes, and email filtering does not monitor devices. Both are needed.
- Backups are verified by regular reporting and restore testing, rather than by a backup job reporting success.
- Where a client holds a print contract, the print provider covers the device itself and Tier1 covers the network path, the print queue, and everything from the network port onwards. Tier1 also supplies printers directly, in which case it covers the whole device.
- Multi-factor authentication resets after a phone change are normally completed during the same call, including temporary code access for a loan handset.
- Entry-level Microsoft licences provide browser-based Word, Excel, and Outlook. Desktop installation requires a higher licence tier.

## Indicative pricing

All figures are NZD, for planning and comparison only, and are not a quote. Monthly bands come from Tier1's standard published rates. GST treatment is confirmed at quoting.

| Category | Indicative range | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Managed email and identity | $80–$225 | per mailbox per month |
| Managed computer | $95–$140 | per device per month |
| Managed services (whole of business) | $150–$400 | per team member per month, blended |
| Managed network | $475–$1,200 | per site per month |
| Business internet | $89–$175 | per circuit per month |
| Migration projects | $150–$400 | one-off, per user — rough sizing only, normally quoted |

Migration is the one figure above that is a sizing estimate rather than a rate. Note that its numbers coincide with the managed services band but mean something different: managed services is $150–$400 per person **per month**, migration is $150–$400 per user as a **one-off**.

### What moves a price within its range

- **Email.** The low end is an email-only mailbox with basic Microsoft 365 licensing. The high end is a full team member with desktop apps, advanced email protection, and mailbox backup. Advanced threat protection, Cisco Duo multi-factor authentication, identity management, and awareness training are present at every point in the range.
- **Managed computer.** The low end is a standard Windows workstation with monitoring, patching, endpoint protection, and remote support. The high end adds macOS endpoint protection, Apple device management, and workstation offsite backup. Servers are scoped individually. Hardware is not included.
- **Managed services.** Complexity drives this more than headcount. A 5-person, single-site business with no servers sits near the low end at roughly $1,900–$2,200 per month. A 25-person single-site business is roughly $7,000–$8,000 per month, and 50 people across two sites is roughly $14,000–$16,000. Sites, field teams, servers, line-of-business applications, and after-hours cover move a business up the range.
- **Managed network.** $475 per site covers internet, a Cisco Meraki advanced security firewall, Wi-Fi, employee and site-to-site VPN, VLAN segmentation, and monitoring. Larger sites, extra access points and switching, failover circuits, and stricter segmentation move it higher. Cabling and capital hardware are separate.
- **Business internet.** Fibre runs from $89 (300/100) to $165 (900/500 Chorus business circuit). 4G/LTE runs $89–$120, with a static IP at $10 per month. Carrier installation charges for a new connection are separate.
- **Migration.** A rough $150–$400 per user is enough to size a budget, but migrations are normally quoted after discovery because the work is driven by what is being moved and how well the current environment is documented, not by headcount alone. The low end is a straightforward mailbox or tenant migration with documented systems and available administrative access. The high end involves servers and file shares moving to cloud, line-of-business applications, a multi-site cutover, or a migration out of an undocumented environment. Onboarding a new managed-services customer is a separate, fixed charge of one month of the managed-services package subtotal. Remediation of pre-existing faults found during discovery is quoted before it starts.

Exact rates, product identifiers, and a deterministic estimator are available through the `tier1-it-assessment` MCP server.

## Why Tier1's option is worth considering

- **Security is inside the price, not an upsell.** Microsoft licensing through Tier1 includes app approvals and Huntress identity threat detection and response. ESET Managed Desktop Protection includes ESET and Huntress EDR. Multi-factor authentication, credential management, and awareness training sit inside the standard team member rate.
- **Monthly vendor commitments.** Vendor commitments are monthly only. Customers are not locked into multi-year licensing or connectivity terms to keep a support relationship.
- **Onboarding is a formula, not a negotiation.** Onboarding equals one month of the managed-services package subtotal, and add-ons do not increase it, so setup cost is predictable before a proposal is written.
- **The customer owns the tenant, data, and domains.** Microsoft tenants, business data, domains, and customer-funded equipment stay under customer ownership, with a documented offboarding process if the relationship ends.
- **Published rates and a machine-readable estimator.** Standard rates are published and a deterministic estimator is exposed over MCP, so a buyer can build a comparable estimate before making contact.
- **One accountable provider.** Devices, people, network, internet, and Microsoft 365 can sit in one managed relationship, which removes the outage that stalls while suppliers disagree about fault.
- **A New Zealand team with regional cover.** NZ-based helpdesk in business hours, emergency and 24/7 on-call cover by arrangement, and regional onsite technicians across Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Tairāwhiti.
- **Commitments written by priority.** Response targets state when a qualified person begins triage, set by priority in the written agreement, rather than blanket resolution guarantees that depend on third parties.
